Poses vs. Prompts: Finding Your Authentic Moments

When you picture your dream wedding photos, you likely envision a mix of timeless elegance and authentic emotion. As a wedding and couples photographer, I often hear couples express a desire for photos that feel natural but still showcase them at their best. This is where the distinction between "poses" and "prompts" comes into play.

This post dives into the difference and why understanding these two approaches can help you choose a photographer whose style aligns with your vision.

What Are Poses?

Poses are structured, intentional positions that you and your partner hold for the camera. Think of the classic “looking into each other’s eyes,” the “gentle forehead touch,” or the iconic group shots with family and friends. These are the carefully orchestrated setups that ensure everyone’s angles are flattering and the composition is picture-perfect.

When Poses Shine:

  • Formal Portraits: A few well-posed shots are must-haves for your wedding album, like those cherished family portraits or the "just married" shot in front of your venue. This is where I will specifically tell you what to do!

  • Highlighting Details: Poses work well for showcasing your dress, bouquet, or the intricate lace of your veil.

  • Confidence Boosting: If you’re nervous in front of the camera, starting with structured poses can help you feel more comfortable.

What Are Prompts?

Prompts, on the other hand, are all about creating moments. Instead of asking you to hold a specific position, I might encourage you to whisper something silly in your partner’s ear, walk hand-in-hand while reminiscing about your first date, or sway together to an imaginary tune. Prompts guide you into natural interaction, allowing authentic emotions to shine.

When Prompts Shine:

  • Candid Moments: Prompts are perfect for capturing laughter, joy, and all those in-between moments that make your relationship unique. Typically, I will tell you some sort of action to do and just let you roll with it!

  • Movement & Energy: They allow for dynamic shots, like spinning your partner around or running hand-in-hand. It's all about being in the moment.

  • Storytelling: Prompts help tell the story of your connection, creating photos that feel like a slice of your everyday love.

Why Both Matter

A balance of poses and prompts is the key to a wedding gallery that feels both polished and personal. Poses ensure you get those classic, frame-worthy shots, while prompts create space for the spontaneous magic that makes your love story yours.

When we work together, my goal is to seamlessly blend these approaches. We’ll set aside time for posed portraits with family and wedding party members, and then transition into a more relaxed atmosphere where prompts allow your personalities to take center stage. This way, your album becomes a beautiful mix of elegance and authenticity.

How to Choose What Works for You

When selecting a photographer, review their portfolio and look for balance.

Do their posed shots feel graceful and timeless? Do their candid images radiate genuine emotion? Have a conversation with your photographer about their approach to ensure it aligns with your comfort level and vision.

And remember: the magic of photography is not about the technical details. It’s about trust, connection, and the moments in between. Whether through a perfectly executed pose or a heartfelt prompt, your love story deserves to be captured as authentically as it feels.
